TABLE TIME

We have an old Ikea table in our home

It’s been used as a storage space for the last year.

Don’t ask me why we don’t have dinner at this table

It’s a touchy subject

But recently I had an idea:

“What if I make the table available?

Clean it off?

And maybe we can use it?”

So that’s what I did

One night, in the process of enjoying a meal at the table

Something special happened

The table officially became our family’s meeting place.

The table became our symbol of togetherness.

The table united us.

You see, starting is not as complicated as you think.

Here are 3 ways the dinner table reinforces the family:

#1: Causes you to plan:

Gathering together for the first time can feel a little awkward and pressured. Planning and setting aside time can remove unnecessary stress.

Look at your family's schedule. Plan out 1 day to start so everyone can be present.

The idea is to start. The benefit begins with the simple act of gathering.

#2: Causes everyone to decompress:

Nowadays, during family gatherings, there’s still the distraction of mobile devices.

You would be surprised at how uncommon talking to those we love most has become.

I often see my time with my family as if it was my last time spending time with them.

So, I make every time count.

The table represents the place for your family to decompress - where listening first and talking second are the most important aspects of that time.

The table has helped me do that.

It will do the same for you.

#3: Creates family unity:

Dinner may look different for everyone.

But sitting at a table and eating dinner with your family is a symbol of unity.

Will your conversations be great? NO.

Will they have different viewpoints? YES.

The consistency of the gathering is more important. The strength of the family lies there.

Someday you may be too busy to sit at the table altogether and that's OK. Modify your table time with your family to their needs or schedule.

The table will help foster and grow your family unit.

Creating a safe space to grow your family takes time and effort.

Good food makes it a bit easier.

See you at the dinner table.

Dinner is served.
